Every Voice - New Mexico

Est 2020

Every Voice New Mexico was founded in the summer of 2020 during the inaugural Next Generation Leaders Fellowship. The Every Voice NM Bill was written by students, survivors, and young alumni in New Mexico through collaboration with lead House sponsor Representative Liz Thompson and a broad coalition of community partners including New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, Girls Inc of Santa Fe, Equality New Mexico, Progress Now NM, and Bold Futures NM. Originally filed in 2020, the bill was refiled in 2023 and is currently waiting to be refiled again.

What does the New Mexico Every Voice Bill do?

The Every Voice New Mexico Bill (HB 43) would enact comprehensive measures to combat sexual violence and support survivors studying at all Institutions of Higher Education in New Mexico. Specifically, the legislation will ensure:

  1. Access to free off-campus medical and legal support services

  2. Anti-retaliation protections for reporting parties from being punished for breaking school code of conduct at the time of an assault

“EVC has taught me so much more than I could have imagined. It was inevitable that I was going to learn how to write bill language and develop rapport with legislators, but this experience has been much more. Every Voice has taught me to find community with others, tenaciously fight for what is important to me and how to think outside of the box. For this, I am eternally grateful and I know that these skills will carry me much further than a legislative session, I am a better advocate, leader and community member in every way because of EVC.”
